This class will provide a solid grounding of the law, both civil and criminal, that governs intentional and unintentional shootings. The differences between a criminal and civil trial will be discussed. A detailed discussion of deadly force and justifiable homicide will greatly expand the student’s knowledge of lawful and unlawful activity. Topics to be covered include:
1. Post shooting considerations, including what to say and/or agree to do.
2. The police investigation (including forensics).
3. Witnesses, the crime scene, and the injured/deceased perpetrator.
3. Selecting an attorney.
3. The role of the prosecutor.
4. The role of the grand jury.
5. Your role in the process.
6. The structure of a criminal trial.
7. The structure of a civil trial.
8. The role of the judiciary.
9. Negligence law in New Mexico, particularly involving unintentional shootings.
10. Justifiable homicide in New Mexico (intentional shootings).
11. Homeowner’s policies and obtaining adequate shooting insurance coverage.
12. Dealing with the media (both print and visual).
13. The psychological impact of the shooting.
14. Major pitfalls to be avoided.
DISCLAIMER:
*Cancellation/Reschedule Policy: We require 1 week notice in the event that you cannot make a course. Students who cancel within 1 week of the course will forfeit their course fee. In the event of a medical or other emergency, we will waive the cancellation fees but we will require satisfactory documentation of said emergency. Students are allowed a maximum of 2 reschedules after which they will be charged a $25 administrative fee.
